About the J. Shipman Award

Johnson Shipman was a pioneer member of the New York affiliate of the National Association of Purchasing Agents, now Institute for Supply Management ®, well-known for giving liberally of his time and counsel. The J. Shipman Gold Medal Award was created by the Purchasing Management Association of New York in 1931, and is presented to those individuals whose modest, unselfish, sincere, and persistent efforts have aided the advancement of the procurement and supply chain management field. Following in the award namesake’s tradition, those chosen for the award have also assisted and guided members of the profession in their endeavors.

Our Newest Shipman Medalist

With her blueprints guiding sourcing and procurement transformations at multiple companies, cross-industry innovator Sue Spence, MBA, is honored with the 2020 J. Shipman Gold Medal Award. Spence is the fifth woman to receive this honor among the 89 recipients of the Shipman Award, which was first presented in 1931. She is the Vice president, sourcing, procurement and disbursements at FedEx Corporation (since 2013).

It’s an incredible honor to receive the recognition, not just for me, but for our team. If not for them and the hard work they’ve done on the transformation (at FedEx), this wouldn’t have been possible.
